On the academic side, UKZN’s School of Law boasts a number of staff members with national and international academic profiles. Many staff members hold degrees from prestigious institutions like the University of Cambridge, the University of London and the University of Michigan. Many have won national and international scholarships such as the Colenso Research Scholarship.
The research output of the School of Law is prolific, with many articles and several books being produced each year.
On the practical side, many staff members play important roles, either regionally or nationally, in developing the law and serving the wider community. Staff members have been appointed to the South African Human Rights Commission; the Consumer Council; the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration; the South African Law Reform Commission; the Presidency of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Legal academics from UKZN helped draft South Africa’s first democratic Constitution. Many staff members are admitted Attorneys or Advocates of the High Court of South Africa, and represent clients in important cases on a regular basis.
