Two students represented UKZN at a 10-day youth leadership camp in India from 18 to 28 June.
Final-year Bachelor of Social Sciences student, Ms Nokuthula Kubheka, and Law student, Mr Sifiso Mbatha, were part of the MMU-Youth Leadership Camp (MMU–YLC) a week-long challenging and meaningful adventure that helps students to develop their leadership potential through participation in a series of workshops, learning sessions and hands-on experience.
Head of UKZN’s International Student Office, Ms Nombuso Mtshali, said selected students demonstrated leadership qualities, were from previously disadvantaged backgrounds, were willing to learn about different cultures, and had never travelled out of the country.
Speaking on the eve of her departure to India, 21-year-old Kubheka said she was humbled by being selected to be part of the camp. ‘This is a platform for me to grow as a leader and enhance my potential and skills as a young Black woman. I hope to come back enriched with knowledge and informed in the area of leadership, especially when it comes to women in a corporate world.’
She said that her late grandmother, who raised her in Newcastle, is the reason she wakes up in the morning to chase her dreams. She hoped that she would learn more about the never-ending competition in the corporate world and the latest market trends.
Mbatha (22), who is from the rural town of Mzingazi, near Richards Bay, said that he was grateful to UKZN for this opportunity. ‘When I first got here, I told myself that I am here to achieve great things, and that has been my mentality ever since. I believe that attending this programme will nurture my leadership skills and help me grow career-wise,’ he said.
Mbatha hopes to one day use the skills and knowledge he has gained, to empower the youth in his community.
The MMU – YLC brought together an eclectic mix of students from all over the world, providing them with a forum for the meaningful exchange of culture and ideas. Emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds participated in professional development workshops and shared their experiences.
Director of University Relations at UKZN, Ms Normah Zondo, said UKZN is proud of the students for putting the University on the map.
