The programme combines coursework and research (dissertation) in environmental law at an advanced level. The subject matter covers all of the important law in relation to general principles of environmental law, the Constitution and its relevance to the environment, natural resources and biodiversity, land-use planning, environmental impact assessment, climate law and pollution control. The primary focus is on domestic South African law, but there is considerable coverage of international law as an important influence on domestic law, both in South Africa and globally. There is focus on legislation and case law within the context of the rationale for environmental conservation.
LLB, minimum 55% average in the degree (depending on number of applicants, the average required is usually significantly higher). Recognition of prior learning is potentially recognised, but currently preference is given to LLB graduates.
Individuals who are already working in environmental conservation fields with the application of environmental law, and environmental and planning lawyers (or those intending to work in these fields).
Advanced knowledge, understanding and critical contextual appreciation of environmental law, particularly in South Africa.
