Law Clinic Howard College

The Law Clinic (LC), established 50 years ago in 1973, is a non-profit-making organisation with various funders.

The Clinic has the following primary objectives:

The provision of free legal services (‘legal aid’) in civil matters to the indigent people of eThekwini and the surrounding areas who cannot afford to pay a private lawyer, thereby increasing access to justice;
The education of UKZN Clinical Law students in the practical application of the law to real clients in order to enable them to serve clients in an effective, efficient, productive, ethical, business-minded and socially conscious manner. In so doing, supervised Clinical Law students assist the LC in its civil legal aid service provision mandate;
1. To provide training for candidate attorneys’ entry into the profession;
2. And where staffing and/or student and financial resources allow:
Promoting legal rights awareness in communities where such legal knowledge is most needed.

Who is eligible for our services?

To qualify for legal assistance from the UKZN Law Clinic, you need to satisfy one or more of the following:

Earn an income of R7,400.00/month or less (Single applicant).
Earn an income of R 8,400.00/month or less (Spouse or household applicant).
Be unemployed.
Be a state pensioner (i.e. a grant recipient or qualifying for a grant).
Be on a disability grant.
Not own fixed property (land or a house) over a particular value.

Consultation times and locations

Consultation times depends on the availability of our staff members; potential clients will be called or emailed with dates and times of their consultations after they have filled in the appointment form. The Law Clinic is open to members of the public daily from 8.30 to 16.30.

Client consultations takes place in our offices that are based at University of KwaZulu-Natal, HUT 11, Howard College Campus, 269 Mazisi Kunene Avenue

How to book an appointment

Potential Clients are required to fill out pre-consultation forms which determine if they qualify for a consultation or not. Jurisdiction, merits of the case, financial means, and LC capacity are ultimately considered as to whether a prospective client’s case may be/is taken on or not.
