As part of the Access to Justice project and its commitment to advancing legal literacy and community empowerment, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Law academic Mr Celinhlanhla Magubane is promoting public legal education through a recurring guest segment on Radio Khwezi’s Siphetha iSonto programme, which airs every Saturday between 11h00 and 11h30.
Radio Khwezi is a community radio station based in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) that focuses on education, health, crime prevention, disability, and other issues that directly affect the community.
Magubane was invited to participate in the radio programme because of his expertise in family disputes and customary law.
“For many individuals, the law often appears distant, complex, and inaccessible. Yet true access to justice is not limited to the existence of courts or legal institutions. It also lies in ensuring that people are equipped with the knowledge necessary to understand, protect and assert their rights,” said Magubane.
He said the primary objective of the programme is to promote public legal education by enhancing community awareness and understanding of family law.
Through this radio segment, Magubane hopes to help bridge the gap between legal institutions and the communities they serve by making legal information accessible, practical and relatable.
“The initiative is rooted in the belief that informed communities are empowered communities, and that justice becomes meaningful when ordinary people are able to understand the rights and protections available to them. It is my hope that these discussions will inspire greater legal consciousness and encourage individuals to actively engage with matters concerning their rights and responsibilities,” he said.
