Biography

Roasia is a lecturer at the School of Law and currently a PhD student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. In 2023, she completed her LLM also at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her dissertation provided a critical legal analysis of parental responsibilities and rights in relation to donor-conceived children. Roasia also holds an LLB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Roasia’s research interests include reproductive rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and access to assisted reproductive technologies. Her PhD will thus analyse the experiences of the South African LGBTQIA+ community in accessing fertility healthcare services. The study, the first of its kind to be conducted in South Africa, is funded by Ferring Pharmaceuticals and the National Research Foundation.

Roasia has worked as a graduate teaching assistant where she performed teaching and administrative functions for the UKZN School of Law. This included acting as a registrar for Moots, and preparing and conducting tutorials for students.

She has also acted as a research assistant for DSI-Africa, a project funded by the US National Health Institute. During this time, she researched and critically analysed laws on data governance and data protection both in South Africa and abroad. This work contributed to the creation of an online database for data protection legislation in Africa and a template for a data transfer agreement. Roasia has also provided technical editing assistance to Masters students and other academics
