Biography

Mrs Mthembu holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM, Medical Law) degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and is currently pursuing a PhD in Medical Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is co-investigator in a research project funded by the Competition Commission South Africa. She has served on the Research and Higher Degrees Committee of the School of Law. In terms of her commitment to community engagement, she has served as a member of the Campus HIV/AIDS Support Unit in their Peer Education Programme.

She is also a governing body member for the Hillcrest Advice Bureau and Bursary Fund. Prior to joining the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she was a lecturer at the Durban University of Technology and also served as a volunteer paralegal for the Hillcrest Advice Bureau and Bursary Fund. She is also a member of the Health Law and Ethics Research Interest Group. Her research interests span across medical law, indigenous knowledge systems in medical law, fertility law, comparative constitutional law, health competition law, new reproductive health technologies, constitutional law, access to fertility treatments.

Mrs Mthembu has presented in various international and national conferences. She has acted as an external reviewer for new programmes at South African universities and have been appointed moderator and external examiner on numerous occasions up to Masters level. In October 2024, she will be on an Erasmus Teaching Mobility Programme at the Department of Law at the University of Messina, Italy.
