The Ellie Newman Memorial Moot Court Competition is the flagship moot court competition of the UKZNSchool of Law and is aimed at familiarizing LLB students with various aspects of litigation and courtroom procedure. 								\n				\n						\n					\n			\n						\n									Date: Wednesday\, 1 November 2023 \nTime: 17h30 FOR 18h00 Doors will be closed at 18h00 \nVenue: Howard College Theatre\, Howard College Campus\, UKZN 								\n					\n		\n					\n		\n				\n					About the theme				\n				\n									The surge in genomic sequencing and genomic research worldwide\, facilitated by reduced costs and technological advances\, has deepened our understanding of the human genome’s role in health and disease. As a result\, numerous local and global institutions are engaged in genomics research. While this research holds great potential to improve healthcare\, it is accompanied by signiant bioethical and legal concerns around privacy\, informed consent\, data sharing\, ownership of genomic data and benet sharing. Notably\, for those on the African continent\, the underrepresentation of individuals of African descent in large-scale genomic research projects needs to be addressed urgently. However\, this is not an easy task\, as genomics research raises complex legal challenges that require a careful balance between competing rights and interests.
