Leading global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright recently hosted 35 female Law students for a Women’s Day High Tea at the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga.

The aim of the tea, attended by undergraduate and postgraduate Law students from Durban and Pietermaritzburg, was to inform students about the opportunities at the firm and for them to engage with female lawyers from the company to gain insights about career progression and how to successfully balance work and family life.

Through her presentation titled: “Be the Architect of Your Future”, Ms Jackie Midlane, a Director in the firm’s banking and finance team in Johannesburg, shared experiences of how she built her career and how she stays successful.

‘I am excited to see a lot of women pursuing a career in Law because there are many opportunities in this field. As a Transactional Lawyer I work at financing projects on renewable energies and that is how I give back to communities,’ said Midlane.

‘At Norton Rose we want all-rounders because a law firm isn’t just about practising law but we are looking for people to contribute to solutions on issues affecting the world,’ she added.

Fourth-year LLB student Ms Shamila Mpinga said she was very inspired by the day.

‘I would like to thank Norton Rose for inviting us to the tea and commend them for giving us the opportunity to network with professionals. Ms Midlane’s words will resonate within me for a very long time and I will consciously make an effort to implement the advice into my professional as well as my personal life,’ she said.
