Bio:
Prof. Shannon Vaughn Hoctor obtained the degrees BA (1985-1987), LLB (1988-1989) and LLM (1991, graduated 1992) at the University of Cape Town. He took the first steps in his academic career at the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Town, inter alia teaching a course in specific crimes, before proceeding to Leiden in the Netherlands to begin doctoral studies. After two years in Leiden, he took up a contract teaching post at the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) at the beginning of 1996. He was appointed to a senior lectureship at UPE from the beginning of 1997, teaching criminal law and jurisprudence, and was awarded the degree DJuris by the University of Leiden in June 1997. After being promoted to associate professor at UPE, he took up a chair in law at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in Pietermaritzburg, where he has taught since July 2002. He teaches substantive criminal law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, along with courses in access to justice, sentencing and jurisprudence. He also served as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2010-2011.
Professor Hoctor has published numerous articles in law journals, along with several chapters in books, and has authored books in criminal law, statutory offences and road traffic law, along with three edited works. He has served as editor-in-chief of the South African Journal of Criminal Justice since 2010, and assistant editor of Obiter since 2002.

Bio:
Having graduated from the University of Natal (PMB) with an LLB in 2002, she commenced articles with Von Klemperers Inc. There her focus was on criminal as well as civil litigation. On admission as an attorney to the High Court of South Africa in 2004, she began reading for her LLM in Business Law at University of KwaZulu-Natal (PMB) and also took up a lecturing post with the faulty of law at the institution. She graduated with her LLM in 2005, and has since then been appointed as Senior Lecturer in the faculty. She is affiliated to a number of NGOs, conducting research concerning children’s rights and HIV. She has been a researcher for HAVEG and ARASA since 2004, and continues to hold those positions today. She has presented papers at AIDS conferences and facilitated workshops across the country. With a PHD focus on Consent as it relates to various aspects of autonomy, she writes primarily in areas of sexual misconduct and medical law. She lectures in the School of Psychology as well as the School of Law, and is also an affiliate member of SARETI where she lectures to Masters Medical Students. Her area of expertise is in the field of criminal law and procedure, and she is steadily making inroads into the fraternity, with the aid of her mentors.

Primary research interests are law and policy issues in criminal law and the intersection with the willful transmission of HIV. Currently reading for a PhD on the Consent Defences and paternalism – examining why volenti appears to be a fluid concept and not uniformly applied in various areas where consent is in issue.

Bio:
Marita Carnelley is one of the country’s leading scholars in the law relating to gambling regulation. She has published extensively in the area, both nationally and internationally, with her latest article, on dog racing, accepted for the Spring edition of the University of Las Vegas Law Gaming Law Journal. Her other area of research and teaching is Family Law with a particular interest in maintenance enforcement and the rights of women married in terms of religious marriages. She has recently updated the LAWSA section of “Persons” (2010 publication forthcoming); wrote chapters in the Oxford University Press text books on the Law of Persons and Family Law (2010 publication forthcoming); as well as updated the chapters on Marriage, Life Partnerships, Minors, Affiliation, Adoption, Domestic Violence, Mental Health, Oaths and Defamation for Butterworth’s Forms and Precedent Law of Persons and the Family (2009). She is on sabbatical in 2010 and intends inter alia to travel to various law libraries abroad and teach Family Law at the University of South Australia (Adelaide).

Bio:
Having graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with an LLB and LLM in Labour Law and, been admitted as an Advocate of the High Court, she is now part of the lecturing staff at the Faculty of Law. Her main research interests are in the areas of Labour Law (focussing on Whistleblowing and Employment Equity) and Family Law (focussing on Divorce, Maintenance and Parent and Child). She has recently given a paper on “Parental Liability for the Payment of School Fees” at the Third National Family Law Colloquium held at the University of Western Cape. She will also be teaching a module (Advanced Law of Persons and Family) in the LLM: Family Law in 2012. She is currently considering a PhD degree in the area of International Humanitarian Law focusing on the child and family.

Bio:

I first joined the Faculty of Law on the Pietermartizburg Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1993 and was promoted to the position of an associate professor in 2002. I teach constitutional law and the law of property at an undergraduate level. I also teach land use and planning law at a postgraduate level.

I am particularly interested in the legal principles governing provincial government in South Africa and was appointed as a special advisor to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2005. In this position I advised the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature on the principles governing provincial constitutions in South Africa.

I am also interested in legal education and was awarded the Distinguished Teacher’s Award: Certificate of Excellence by the University in 2003

Bio:
Priya Singh’s scholarship focuses on the areas of delict, maritime law, succession, trusts and internet law. Her Phd will focus on the changes that the advent of the internet is forcing on the traditional law of delict. She is especially interested in the impact of Hindu law on Hindu women in South Africa and keenly monitors the historical impact of hindu law focusing particularly on how traditional Hindu law is diverging from changing family roles, composition and structures of the Indian diaspora.

Bio:
Ms Soni graduated from the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) with an LLB degree in 2003. After completing her articles of clerkship at attorneys Venn, Nemeth & Hart Inc. she was admitted as an attorney in 2006. She then returned to the Faculty of Law as a contract lecturer. No stranger to a very busy lifestyle (which includes raising a little boy!) she studied for an LLM in Business Law at the School of Law at Howard College and was awarded the degree in 2007. In 2008 she was appointed as a permanent member of the Faculty and very quickly began to focus her research in the dynamic and ethically charged field of medical law, specifically assisted reproductive technology law. She has developed legal expertise with regards to the law regulating surrogacy and assisted reproduction as well as the laws regulating human and animal cloning and embryonic screening. She also liaises frequently with international human fertility regulatory institutions in the U.K and the United States in pursuance with her doctoral research. At an early stage in her academic career she has begun to establish herself as a respected researcher in her field, and serves a guest lecturer on medical ethics masters programmers at other institutions as well as a research assistant and advisor on numerous ethics committees and NGO’s.

Research Interests:
Primary research interests are law and policy issues in medical law, specifically assisted reproductive technologies and genetics such as human cloning; IVF treatment; surrogacy and the use of human beings and human and embryonic tissue in medical research and treatment. Currently reading for a PhD on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis – Reproductive Rights and the law (An examination into the ethical and legal implications of embryonic screening and the lacunae in South African law.)

Bio:
Darren Subramanien graduated from the University of KwaZulu Natal with an LLB in 2006. In 2007 he lectured Commercial law at the faculty of law at the University of KwaZulu Natal (Pmb Campus). In 2008 he commenced articles with a well known Pietermaritzburg law firm, Venn Nemeth and Hart Attorneys. In 2009 he returned to the faculty of law in Pietermaritzburg, where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Labour Law and has since been appointed as a lecturer at the faculty of law. In 2010 Darren was enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. He is currently a member of the Anti Human Trafficking task team based in KwaZulu Natal. He intends pursuing a Phd in the area of Company law and his areas of expertise are in the fields of Corporate law, Commercial law and Public International law more specifically the law relating to Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery. Darren currently lectures Corporate law and Commercial law.

Bio:
Khulekani joined academia at teh beginning of 2010 after graduating with an LLB from the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2009. He has further engaged in PGD /LLM in Maritime Law and Economics.

He is highly involved in local programmes, eradicating illiteracy and poverty in the townships. Furthermore is in progress of revising strategies and policies in dealing with elderly abuse and substance abuse by youth.

Bio:
Ms Whitear-Nel practiced as an attorney before joining the University. She maintains links with the legal profession, and believes this is beneficial to her and to her students as it feeds both her research and teaching functions. She is married, with four children. She is an avid reader, with wide ranging interests which include textile art, sailing, and permaculture. Fortunately, she is also very interested in the law.
